The snack-bar flavour comes from two things: using gochugaru (chilli flakes) as well as gochujang, and not being shy with the sugar. Anchovy stock instead of water makes it noticeably deeper. Soak hard rice cakes in warm water for 10 minutes first. Save a little sauce at the end for dipping fried snacks.
Ingredients
- Tteokbokki rice cakes (wheat or rice)300 g
- Flat fish cakes2 sheets
- Green onion1
- Cabbage1 handful
- Boiled eggs2
- Anchovy stock or water400 ml
- Gochujang2 tbsp
- Gochugaru1 tbsp
- Sugar1.5 tbsp
- Soy sauce1 tbsp
- Garlic, minced1/2 tbsp
Steps
- Rinse the rice cakes and separate any that are stuck together. Soak hard ones in warm water for 10 minutes.
- Cut the fish cakes into bite-size pieces, the green onion diagonally and the cabbage roughly.
- In a wide pan, whisk the stock with the gochujang, gochugaru, sugar, soy sauce and garlic, and bring to a boil.
- Add the rice cakes, fish cakes and cabbage. Simmer over medium heat for 5–7 minutes, stirring, until the sauce thickens.
